OpenSource Movement

I have been working on MS platform and software more less since 1997 and now I think I should get some kind of OpenSource strategy. I know Linux, OpenOffice and Mozilla and they are great pieces of software. I still prefer WinXP over Linux and MS Office over OpenOffice but Mozilla have taken a place as a default browser.

R.I.P Netscape

It has been news today that AOL is firing people from Netscape, mainly from research and development. There is no doubt that this is results about AOL vs. Microsoft settlement 2 months ago where MS settle antitrust suit brought by AOL Time Warner, paying the latter $750 million.

But is this really a bad thing? This is how business works; if you have money you can buy your competitor out. Microsoft doesn?t want future development on fat web clients because that would kill their office application. Ok, this is a bad thing for those people in Netscape who got laid off but I believe MS did not choose to laid off bad ones and those who are now writing their CV’s can write there that “MS paid AOL $750M to get me fired” ;-)

adbusters.org

I found a link to adbusters site. Adbusters is a global network of artists, activists, writers, etc.. who want to advance the new social activist movement of the information age. Their ads are censored from biggest channels in US like MTV, CNN, Fox, NBC ABC etc…
Here is a few picks from their website.

Apparently Microsoft has taken UNIX thinking on setting up server environment. In previous versions of MS Servers everything used to be open and setting up web server took only 2 hours max. Now you need 1 day to setup web server because everything is closed and to enable those services you need to know more than pressing next buttons on wizards.
